Before leaving

Visa

For those citizens whose governments have agreements with the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, the tourist visa is actually immediate, you simply need to have a valid passport, with an expiry date not inferior to 6 months from the arrival date.

Generally tourists can stay on the Brazilian soil for 90 days. After this lapse of time they will have to ask for a new visa at the Federal Police offices, without forgetting that the maximum stay allowed in Brazil is 180 days per year.

ther types of visas in Brazil are : transit, official courtesy, diplomatic, temporary and permanent. For these types of visas, contact the Brazilian diplomatic offices in your country of origin since they can be required exclusively outside of Brazil.

Travelling with pets

Leaving on an intercontinental journey with pets never is too easy. It is a advisable to follow some precautions: In order to let pets in the country, Brazil requires a certificate stating that your pet is not affected by diseases like rabies or other diseases dangerous for people. The traveller must always have at hand the GTA (Guide for Animal Transport) released by the Ministry of Agriculture of the country of origin. To be let into the country, besides the certificate and the GTA, the pet must have been given all the vaccinations required at least a month before departure. All the documents must be sent to the Brazilian Consulate of your country of origin where they will be examined in order to evaluate if the journey can be allowed or not. In case the pet is considered of a species that belongs to the fauna of a specific country, it will definitely not be let into Brazil.

Vaccinations

Even if no vaccination is required, the person who travels to Brazil must take some health precautions, since there are in Brazil some viruses and bacteria, to which the foreign tourist can be vulnerable, this is one more reason to adopt a simple precaution: vaccination.

Before travelling to any country in the world, it is advisable to consult your own doctor, in order to know how to prevent the most frequent diseases in the different areas of the country.

A short guide to vaccination

It is advisable to have almost all types of vaccination one month before leaving, so that you can be sure that it is effective and can grant immunity. Besides the vaccinations listed hereafter, also the one against tetanus and smallpox are recommended.

Clothes, safety and other advice

When preparing your suitcase, remember that in Brazil the sun shines almost all the year long, therefore we recommend that you take with you light and casual clothes, including T-shirts, swimming suits and pareo, a hat, sun glasses, sun creams and repellents against mosquitoes, a light raincoat, something heavier for places with air conditioning and for autumn evenings. For ecotourism excursions we suggest trekking shoes, long and light trousers to protect against mosquitoes.

Violence and security problems, unfortunately, are common all over the world. Also in Brazil, especially in big urban areas, these problems are quite evident.

Therefore we recommend that travellers take some precautions. First of all it is good to avoid "looking like a tourist". Don't use excessively evident accessories like, for example, an "African hunter's hat". Chose instead informal and discreet clothes. Don't use big or bulky bags and always carry little money with you, better if more banknotes of little value, while use you credit card for bigger expenditures. Don't wear precious jewels nor gold and mind your camera. In case of theft never react, the thieves could be armed.

To avoid thefts or losses, carry with you only the necessary documents: identity card or passport and in case you have to drive, your driving licence. Check that the driving licence issued by your country is also valid in Brazil.

If you travel alone with children who are not of age, always carry with you the document signed by the other person who is responsible for the child. This document must be produced to the Brazilian Consulate of your country of origin before travelling for translation and legalization. Brazilian authorities, usually, require this document when entering and leaving the country.

It is a good rule to check that your health covering is valid abroad. If you need special medicines, take with you the original prescriptions and a short description of your health problem in order to face any eventuality.
