History of Bed & Breakfast

The "inventors" of this type of accommodation were the Irish. The habit of local people of hanging outside their doors the now famous “Bed & Breakfast” signs goes back to about 40 years ago. Travellers and tourists on the island thus knew that, in those houses, they would find a good bed where to spend the night and a big breakfast to start the day with.

After Ireland , also Scotland , England , Wales and, little by little, other countries in Europe and all over the world started offering this type of accommodation, re-inventing the way of welcoming tourism.

The best ambassadors of this formula have been young people who, in the latest 30 years, have taken advantage of the B&B low prices, greatly contributing to its development. Throughout the years, this type of accommodation has been improved and the innovations proposed have attracted a bigger and more diversified range of tourists, thus increasing both the demand and the offer of B&Bs and the services related to them.

The “concept of bed & breakfast”, has now been existing in Brazil for a few years. There are a lot of experiences in this field, especially in Rio de Janeiro and in some cities in the north-east. Even if this has happened in an informal and spontaneous way, these experiences have contributed to the adaptation of B&Bs to the Brazilian way of being and a type of incoming structures have been created that are characterized by a sense of hospitality, cheerfulness and friendliness typical of Brazilian people. Now thanks to Bed & breakfast Brasil, all these experiences have been gathered in a network to make this offer more accessible and visible. The network has amplified the circulation of experiences and has allowed the growth of B&Bs that have found a way of being well organized throughout the vast national territory.

Why Bed & Breakfast?

Compared with traditional accommodations (hotels, inns, etc.), Bed & Breakfasts offer the travellers a less formal and restrictive formula:

Moreover among the various types of accommodations offered, that of Bed & breakfasts is the only one which is really based on the concept of sustainable tourism:

Just few rules to respect

For the landlords
  1. CLEANING. It is vital. The B&b besides being a private house is also an incoming structure and, as such, it has to grant the best in terms of hygiene and order.
  2. A PERSONAL TOUCH. The guests' rooms must be furnished with care, just like the rest of the house. It is that personal touch that makes guests feel "at home".
  3. CLEAR RULES. It is a good rule to make clear, since the beginning, the landlords' habits: if smoking is allowed, the presence of pets, timetables to respect...
  4. COMMON AND PRIVATE SPACES. Making guests feel at ease, also implies indicating which are the parts of the house, a part from their bedroom, that the guests can freely use.
For the guests
  1. GOOD BEHAVIOUR. The respect for what is mostly a private house is the fundamental ingredient for living together.
  2. RESPECT OF TIMETABLES. Arrival time or breakfast time are agreed from one day to the other. It is essential to respect them.
  3. INTEREST. The landlords are gratified also by the interest shown towards them, their house and the community where they live.
  4. PAY GREAT ATTENTION. "Feeling at home" also means responsibility and attentions towards the things and the people who live in that house just as if we were in our home.
